So, You’re Trying to Survive the AI Apocalypse? Here’s the answer
You’re probably bombarded with conflicting messages about AI and the future of work: “AI is taking your job!” “Learn to code!” “There will be no work!” It’s enough to make your head spin.
Let’s cut through the noise.
The truth, as always, lies somewhere in the middle. The World Economic Forum’s Future of Work report, a pretty reliable source, paints a more nuanced picture.
AI and data will reign supreme, but coding might not be king.
Think about it. AI is getting smarter, and tools are becoming more user-friendly. Soon, we might be instructing AI with simple prompts instead of writing endless lines of code. Don’t get me wrong, coding will still be valuable, but the demand for basic coding might decline.
So, what does this mean for YOU?
You have two paths (everything inbetween will become obsolete):
Become a Hyper-Focused Coding Ninja:
Think Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Andrew Ng. These are the titans, the 1% of the coding world. They’re exceptional, laser-focused, and often, have a single-minded drive. This path demands immense dedication and the ability to constantly evolve as AI progresses.Become an Interdisciplinary AI-Powered Superhero:
Think Elon Musk, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg. These are the polymaths, the Renaissance people of our time. They’re passionate about a wide range of things, often with unconventional backgrounds. Their diverse perspectives make them unique and invaluable.
Which path resonates with you?
The Programmer: High earning potential, but intense competition. You need to be exceptional to stand out.
The Interdisciplinary Expert: Requires finding the right combination of skills and passions. You need to identify a niche where your unique blend of expertise is in high demand.
I chose the interdisciplinary path. I have a background in management, media, and design, which I’ve combined with AI and analytics. This gives me a unique perspective and allows me to communicate with people from different backgrounds.
So how do you find you skills?
Competition is for losers (as Peter Thiel famously said). Instead of trying to fit into a box, find a unique combination of skills that makes you irreplaceable. This is called skill stacking.
This is something that famous founder, e.g. “The Diary of CEOs’ very own Steven Barlett talks about.
But I’ve also heard it in my latest conversation with Sr. Data Sciencist Florian Roscheck. Click play to listen to it:
Let’s another example: Sustainability. On the surface, it seems worlds apart from AI. But AI consumes energy, right? That’s a connection. A stronger link: using AI to analyze and predict sustainability trends.
Imagine using your knowledge to gather and analyze data, then building AI models to track progress towards sustainability goals. This unique skillset would make you incredibly valuable.
The future of work is about finding your unique superpower.
In the comments, share your thoughts: What unique combination of skills are you developing? What are your “future skills”? Let’s inspire each other!
